Education Data Notice

This notice is provided as a courtesy: it describes how the education features of Echosaw process and retain data, and makes no commitments beyond those in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, which govern.
Echosaw’s education features are offered to users who are 18 years of age or older — college and adult learners, and the educators who teach them. Echosaw is not directed to children, and accounts may not be created for or on behalf of minors.
Educators who create a class on Echosaw are responsible for ensuring the students they invite or sponsor meet the minimum age requirement.
In addition to the data described in our Privacy Policy, the education features create and store the following records:
- Study card state: per-concept spaced-repetition scheduling state (due date, stability, difficulty, repetitions, lapses) for each learner.
- Recall logs: a record of each review a learner submits, including the concept, the grade given, the time of review, and the class the review belongs to.
- Attempt records:quiz and test attempts, including the packet and items presented, the responses recorded (including typed free-response answers and, where AI grading is used, the resulting grade), the score, attempt timing, and integrity signals for educator review (for example loss of tab focus, a paste into an answer, or a submit after the deadline). Integrity signals are review evidence, not proctoring — there is no webcam or browser lockdown, and they do not contain answer content.
- Study packets and study items: the named, frozen sets of prompts and answers generated from a source media, along with an audit trail of educator corrections.
- Uploaded media and generated outputs: the lectures, recordings, images, and links submitted for analysis, and the transcripts, summaries, and other outputs derived from them.
- Class membership and usage: the organization (class) a learner belongs to, their role, whether an educator sponsors them, and — where the class sets a per-member analysis cap — how much of that monthly cap the member has used.
Education records follow our Data Retention & Deletion Policy. In summary:
- Study card state, recall logs, attempt records, study packets, uploaded media, and generated outputs are retained while the account remains active.
- Deletion is student-record-scoped: a learner may request deletion of their own study records — card state, recall logs, and attempt records — and of the media they uploaded.
- Deletion requests enter a 30-day soft-delete window and are then permanently and irreversibly removed, including from derived indexes and embeddings.
- Deleting a learner’s study records does not delete the class study packets an educator created; those belong to the class and are managed by the educator.
Learners should understand what an educator can see. In a class, the class owner and administrators can view, for the students on their roster:
- per-concept mastery and scheduling state for the concepts in that class;
- which students are overdue for review and which concepts the class is weak on;
- quiz and test attempt scores recorded in that class;
- the account email associated with each roster member.
Educators can also review the integrity signals recorded on an attempt and a student’s typed responses, and can export the class’s test attempts (the score of record) as CSV or JSON for their own gradebook. Such an export is scoped to the educator’s own class and does not include another organization’s data.
This visibility is scoped to the class. Educators do not gain access to a student’s personal (non-class) study records or to media the student did not share with the class.
There are no education-specific subprocessors. The service providers used to operate Echosaw are described in our Privacy Policy and Data Processing Addendum; the education features do not introduce a separate set of providers.
Echosaw does not claim any regulatory certification, accreditation, or approval. Nothing in this notice states or implies that Echosaw is “FERPA certified” or “COPPA certified” — no such certification exists for either statute.
COPPA.The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act governs the online collection of personal information from children under 13. Echosaw is offered only to users 18 and over and is not directed to children, so we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
FERPA. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act applies to educational agencies and institutions that receive U.S. Department of Education funding, and to certain parties acting on their behalf. Echosaw is a general-purpose media intelligence product sold directly to individuals and organizations; we are not an educational institution. Where an institution uses Echosaw and considers records created in it to be education records, that institution is responsible for determining whether FERPA applies to its use and for meeting its own obligations, including any school-official designation or direct-control requirements. We have not entered into institution-level FERPA arrangements, and this notice does not create one.
